The Power of the Ordinary

Complete audiobook · Free · No sign-up

The accident lasted a few seconds. The silence, several decades.

I was four when I was punished for something I hadn't done. Nobody asked what had happened. That day, I learned it was safer to stay quiet.

At twenty-two, beside my mother's hospital bed, that silence found a way out.
It wasn't words that came out.

A human story open to the extraordinary

A spiritual experience can open you up insideand leave many wounds untouched.

Many people learned very early that expressing themselves, feeling, or being seen could have consequences. This is the human side of the book:

  • You understand why you react the way you do. You still find yourself doing it again.
  • When someone asks how you feel, you answer with an explanation.
  • You have achieved things that matter, but you still do not feel at ease in your own life.
  • A breakup, a loss, guilt, or an unexpected change has forced you to stop.
  • You have meditated, read, and searched for answers, but struggle to bring any of it into daily life.

What I did find

At eighteen I went through something I understood as a sacred experience, and for years I thought it had transformed me. It took me two decades to understand that the discovery was somewhere else: in my daughter's hand, in an honest account of my separation, in the job I left, and in mornings that had nothing special about them. I began to recognise that same sacred presence in everyday life.

If Autobiography of a Yogi first drew you toward spiritual life, this book is about what comes next: bringing what you have learned into relationships, work, family, and daily life.

It is a life told with its cracks and its discoveries. If you recognise something of yourself in these pages, the book will have done its work.

The Sacred Cracks

Childhood, guilt, and an experience I could not explain

These first four episodes begin with a childhood scene and lead to an experience I had at eighteen. What happened then did not erase the guilt or resolve my life.

Chapter 2 · 17:27

The Night That Dissolved Me

Naked Under the Light That Burns

Les Angles, winter, age eighteen. While his family sleeps, an immense current draws him out of the room toward a white light, where a man speaks without moving his lips.

Chapter 3 · 19:52

The Face in the Fallen Book

Where Time Folds Upon Itself

In a Manhattan bookstore, a stranger in a turban points to a book in Sergi's arms and disappears. On the sidewalk the book slips from his hands and falls open at a photograph.

The Eternal Embers

Marriage, children, work, and separation

This is the book's longest and most grounded section. Spirituality stops being only an inner experience and meets college, an ashram in India, first love, marriage, children, and finally divorce.

Chapter 4 · 20:24

The Years of Inner Fire

Transformation Beneath the Skin

Nineteen years old, failing classes, and a yoga center discovered out of curiosity. What begins as a wish to "become smarter" ends at a retreat where he searches for his true self—and finds no one at the center.

Chapter 5 · 32:03

The Pilgrim Who Returns Empty

India and the Mirror of Detachment

At Sathya Sai Baba's ashram, he unpacks his bag to stay—and minutes later, an inner voice compels him to leave. An honest chapter about the difference between a true calling and an escape in disguise.

Chapter 6 · 16:18

Maria, the Recognition

Where Two Solitudes Meet

Before meeting Maria, there is a surrender beneath the shower: "I don't know how to do this. You take over." Almost a year later, they find themselves holding the wastebasket of a paper shredder together.

Chapter 7 · 13:43

The Presence That Watched Over Us

Whispers of the Veil

A poorly divided serving of hot chocolate and churros reveals how difficult it is to learn to listen. At night, a shared ritual of invocation opens an unexpected territory of cooperation.

Chapter 8 · 23:18

The Panthers of Farewell

Dying While Alive to Be Reborn

Thirteen years of marriage, two children, and a dream of two panthers announcing a change he cannot yet name. Sitting on the bathroom floor after signing the divorce papers, he understands: this is it.

Chapter 9 · 17:39

The Theater of Confirmations

When the Universe Conspires

A stage production of Autobiography of a Yogi sets off a chain of synchronicities. That same night, at 3:52 a.m., Sergi begins writing the book you are now listening to.

The Imperishable Moment

What remains when you stop looking for new answers

The final episodes are about work, accompanying other people, and finding a way for spiritual and material life to coexist.

Chapter 10 · 22:02

The Tie That Choked Me

Breaking the Cage to Remember

Thirty-two years old, locked in an office restroom, trying to remember how to breathe. The tie is far too tight—and it is not only the tie.

Chapter 11 · 19:44

The Mirror I Am for Others

Presence as Service

An executive on the other side of the screen says, "I can't slow down." One question—what remains of you when no one is evaluating you?—begins to open a crack.

Chapter 12 · 29:11

The Dance of My Opposites

Wesak and the Geometry of the Soul

Each afternoon, the same desk changes languages: startups and public funding until six, then the silence of people searching for their own path. Two worlds that finally stop competing.

Epilogue · 09:50

The Open Circle

The Ordinary as a Portal

One morning in June 2025, he finishes the book he began at 3:52 a.m. a year earlier. It closes not with a revelation, but with an awkward apology to his daughter and the decision to stay.

What you may still be wondering

Is the audiobook really free? Where is the catch?

There is no catch and no sign-up. The fourteen episodes are the complete audiobook and will stay here even if you buy nothing. If you later want to read, underline, or give the book to someone, it is available on Amazon in nine languages.

Is it a memoir or a book about spirituality?

It is a memoir. I tell what I lived through and how I understood it, without doctrine and without asking you to share my conclusions. If anything runs through the book, it is what I kept finding in ordinary things: in fatherhood, in an honest account of my separation, in work, and in mornings that seemed to hold nothing sacred.

Do I need to believe in anything to listen to this book?

No. I tell what I lived through and explain how I understood it, but you do not need to share my conclusions. Much of the book is precisely about what a spiritual experience does not resolve.

How long is it, and where should I start?

Four and a half hours across fourteen episodes of nine to thirty-two minutes. The introduction and chapter 1 are at the top of this page, so you can start right now. If you prefer the full order, carry on with chapter 2, or have them sent by email, one each morning.

What is The Power of the Ordinary actually about?

It is a memoir about guilt, spiritual searching, work, fatherhood, and divorce. It begins with an experience I had at eighteen and follows the next two decades, when that experience was not enough to resolve daily life.

Can I listen to it with children around?

There is no explicit content, but there is illness, separation, and adult pain told plainly. I would say from adolescence onward.
